Seeking magic on Pulau Besar

It started with a trip to Umbai for some famous ikan bakar.
As the place was crowded, I had to share my table with a group who had just returned from Pulau Besar. As we talked, what they said stoked my interest about the island. The following weekend, I packed my bags and headed to Umbai again but this time, I boarded a bumboat for Pulau Besar – an island with sandy beaches and blue waters that’s excellent for swimming, fishing and snorkelling.
There is also a mystical touch to the island. Many early missionaries from the Middle-East were buried here. What is so special about the graves is that they are seven feet long and some are believed to be “keramat”, so many people come here to offer prayers and to seek blessings. There are many wells on the island, the most famous of which is a “wishing well” known as Tempayan, believed to have been dug long ago by islanders to hide their valuables from pirates seeking refuge during the monsoon. It is said that the kind-hearted will find valuables when they dip their hands into the shallow well, but all I got was a one sen coin.
The other attraction is a spilt boulder or Batu Belah Batu Bertangkup. To get to this place, you have to go through a jungle trekk and climb a hill.I was surprised to see huge iguanas feasting on the heads of goats that had been slaughtered there, unperturbed by human presence. I truly enjoyed my one-day sojourn. The island has chalets and resorts but for those on a budget, you can even sleep in tents on the beach.

Relaxing at Redang

PULAU Redang is simply stunning, with a magnificent shoreline of fine white sand and a coral garden immersed in a clear blue sea. A haven for snorkelling and diving enthusiasts, the island is surrounded by majestic green hills casting shadows in the simmering sea and is a perfect getaway for holiday makers. The Laguna Redang Island Resort is the only resort at Pasir Panjang, one of the island’s finest beaches with powdery white sand and clear blue waters.

The low-rise resort retains a ‘modern paradise’ concept that cleverly infuses traditional Malay architecture with modern amenities and yet is in perfect harmony with the natural greenery. It has all the signature touches of its designer, the well-known Terengganu-born architect Raja Datuk Kamarul Bahrin Shah. One cannot help but marvel at the unique and fine design of the resort which has 212 rooms and suites (with private balcony) either fronting the beach or a well-landscaped garden. If you are lucky, you might catch a glimpse of Laguna’s natives – mischievous monkeys and curious squirrels peeping from the roof top at the well-spread buffet tables.

Serving local and continental cuisine, the seaview Ala-Carte Restaurant provides an unforgettable dining experience. You can also take a walk along the beach after dinner, dance under the stars at the open disco or head for the private karaoke lounges and indoor beach club which features live entertainment. There’s no shortage of sports and recreational activities – from snorkelling and fishing to night diving, island excursion, sunset cruise, jungle trekking, water sports etc. It’s so easy to fall in love with Pulau Redang, touted as one of the best islands in Malaysia and also among the places with the best coral and marine eco-systems in the region. And at Laguna, you have the advantage of having easy access to the best that the island has to offer.

Top Ten Beaches in the World

The sun, the soft sand sifting through your toes and fingers, the salty wind blowing in from the sea, the sound of waves...the ultimate holiday and vacation! If you're like everyone else in this world, you should be looking for some of the top beaches in the world. And lucky for you, we have done the research on the world's most popular beaches and have listed them here for you in no particular order.

The first one is Poipu Beach, Hawaii. If you believe in Paradise, this is it. In terms of a beach, this is definitely a world-class beach and should not be missed. Absolutely breathtaking! Poipu Beach is recently named America's top beach by The Travel Channel with the most extensive golden sand and provides a host of activities for travelers and beach-lovers.

The second on the list is Matira Beach, also another not-to-be-missed beach! Matira Beach is one of those magical islands of Bora Bora that makes up French Polynesia in the South Pacific. Long and lazy stretches of beach with whispering shores is what you can expect from Matira Beach. In fact, Matira Beach is as magical and enchanting as it comes. It's not called the world's most romantic beach for nothing. People flock to Matira Beach to make proposals - imagine that!

Just when you thought there is nothing more to Mexico but Tequila and snakes, in comes Maroma Beach. Maroma Beach is more like a holiday resort getaway destination offering a combination of luxurious resorts and spas; and 500 acres of beach and rain forest.

Next on the list of top ten beaches are Pink Sands and South Sands - nestled on the edges of Salcombe. A contending beach would be the Ipanema Beach in Rio de Janeiro. The beaches are filled with beach-goers almost all year round and who can blame them? Inexpensive accommodation and traveling makes these beaches the top few beaches in the world!

If you're hooked on surfing, don't forget to drop by Biarritz Beach on a holiday. It's an absolute haven for surfers with 2 large beaches and a myriad of smaller beaches in between. And France also offers holiday-goers and beach-lovers a gem of a beach in the form of the St. Tropez beach. Who doesn't know that St. Tropez is well known for its bikinis and beachwear groundbreaking fashion rules? St. Tropez is a hot favorite among Hollywood stars and is nestled along the French Riveria. It pays that St. Tropez beach is also a short drive from Nice and Cannes.

Coming up next is the Clifton Beach on Cape Town, South Africa. One of the most amazing sceneries can be found there. Imagine enjoying the beach with the gorgeous Table Mountain as a backdrop. There's never anything quite like that on a beach. And if you're looking for a natural and exotic beach, you might want to try out Anse de Argent beach in Seychelles. For nature-lovers, Anse de Argent is heaven!
